Are CDers canaries in the coal mine?

What does the idiom "canary in the coal mine" mean?

Are CDers the most vulnerable of all of us to our 21st century Western lifestyle and environment? Is everyone eventually susceptible to the causes of CD? Should we be watching more closely?

Here is the happy little canary, pick axe in hand, cheerfully going about his work of subterranean digging to promote extraction of fossil fuels to burn in our factories and generators.  If he dies, it is a reliable sign that the rest of us should not go into the coal mine?

Here is the Crohn's patient going about his work, visiting doctors, undergoing tests and procedures, filling prescriptions, taking pills and infusions, while eating, working, and living with the rest of us.  If he gets sicker, what does it mean?
